  • Need help with laptop

I've got an older Sony Vaio VGN-NS140E. It was working fine and one day, while starting it, it just showed the 'Vaio' screen then a black screen.

I don't hear the beep when it turns on. You can hear everything running.
I tried going into the BIOS but I get a Memory management screen where it runs a memory test. After its done, it just restarts and goes back to the black screen.

Any ideas of what it could be? What else can I check?

Nothing. As soon as it finished it restarted.

Pull the cover for the ram and reseat the ram and try booting again. If you're unsure of where it's located, Google the model number for directions.

Be sure to power down, pull the battery, then press and hold the power button for 20-30 seconds to bleed off any residual power.

If it still fails, pull one stick (assuming there are two) and try again. If still not booting, swap them out and try again.

If it still fails, bring it to me.

Can you boot into Safemode with Networking? Power on then repeatedly tap F8 till you're presented the option then select it.

When I do it sends me to that memory test screen. I just swapped the hd from my little netbook and it worked. So I guess my hd is gone?

Probably the boot strap is corrupted.

Use a IDE/SATA USB adapter kit and plug the non-bootable drive into a working computer. If the drive partition is still good, the computer will recognize it as a removable drive and make a drive letter assignment for it. And you will be able to perform some degree of data recovery from any of the good sectors on the drive. You can also fire up an elevated command prompt and use the change directory command to get to the drive you just plugged in. Then try to run a basic system repair using the sfc /scannow command. Or try right clicking on it and through properties, perform the same task through the Tools tab.

Do you have an OS disc or means to slave that drive and run chkdsk?

Do you want me to throw a disc in the mail or do you want to go buy an adapter to slave the drive and work on it that way?
