Computer repair guys, gotta question

I've had my home pc for several years and finally added a few sticks of ram a new power supply and added a video card. It was running great until this weekend. I was watching the cove on netflix and the screen froze for a few moments then the screen locked up.

Shortly after I got a blue screen, a restart and everything was good. Today I was trying to check out the youtube vid on the kittens with with lasers and almost instantly got a shockwave error. I closed the browser (google chrome) and reopened it with the same result. Checked out the error message and removed shockwave thru the add/remove programs, saved the newest shockwave exe file to my desktop and was going to install it in safe mode. I tried to restart the comp and got a missing ntldr error. Cant boot up even to use safe mode. I have a old xp operating system disc from an old gateway comp so I tried to follow the directions prompted and still no luck.

Typically, I wouldn't mind but I not only have a lot of photos on this drive there are also a lot of documents that are important to an ongoing legal matter as well so reformating and starting fresh is not an option. Sorry for the long read any help? And yes I have bewb pics to post as well as soon as I can get this sorted.

Sounds like the hard drive has shit the bed. Try using the "Last Known good Configuration that worked" It's in the same menu as the safe mode. If it's just a driver or a corrupted file, that should get you back into windows.

Cannot use F8 to get to that menu. I can copy the ntldr file from the xp disk to the c drive in the recovery console but when i reboot i still get the same error.

I attempted to do just that, with no luck. It never prompts for password. And I can copy the 1st file, the second file gives me a cannot find or something along those lines. I also cannot eject the cd to restart as it instructs to do before rebooting.

Sucks that I just picked up a new larger power supply, ram, and a video card to help keep this machine running a little longer.

First if it's a bad hard drive stop messing with it or it's just going to get worse and your chances of recovering data is going to be reduced.

2. Make a BartsPE disk or Ultimate bootCd. You will need to make sure your hard drive controller driver is included or else you won't beable to access your harddrive.

3. plug in a USB thumb drive or an external hard drive, boot up using Barts or Ultimate BootCd and use the file explorer program to copy the data off.

Thanks for the offer Ram. I spoke with TXredneck yesterday evening and while he explained everything for me I still didn't feel qualified to go through with it so I'm taking my computer to him this afternoon. Thanks again for the replies and offers to help guys!

Boot of the Windows CD, go into repair console which should take you out to a command prompt.
Run ChkDsk and it should fix that.
CHKDSK /F/R

I wish it were that easy...

I got everything recovered except one file. It's a .doc and it's permissions are hosed to the point I can't copy or open no matter what I do. I have to get the system bootable to log into his UA and try it from there.

The original error he posted about is now gone and I'm at the point of manually restoring the registry hives to get it to boot.

I'm just glad to hear you were able to see and recover all my files and my hard drive being ok after all is much welcomed news as well. I just need that hard drive to last until next friday so I can pick up another hard drive just to play it safe.
