  • Buying an xbox 360 used

Is it a really bad idea? If not a bad idea, what would I look for?

I am console impaired, so help me out.

You can buy them used at gamestop for 129.00 with all the cables and 1 wireless controller, but you'll need to get a harddrive, the price will be different depending on what you want. I would be wary of buying a system off like craigslist or something but Amazon might be ok because they have buyer protection stuff.

ONly buy used if it's the "S" model. Not the old style fat models.

Will it have the S next to the model number? Where do you look for the S designation?

No marking that states "S". They look like this: http://sonic.wikia.com/wiki/Xbox_360

It's the top picture. The bottom picture are the old bad models.

I have an older model and have zero issues with it. It is an Elite and I got it the day they came out. No red rings for me.

I had an old one for like 3-4 years with no issues then one day it just RROD'd but they were good about fixinh it and got it back to me in 1.5 weeks. They are kind of hit and miss.

I would not buy used unless I knew the person I was buying it from. They are fairly inexpensive new.

Doesnt Microsoft also ban the unit from online service "forever" if the person who owned it was caught "cheating" in some way? Correct me if I am wrong

Usually if the console is modded to run pirated games, those are the ones that get banned. When it comes to cheating on specific games, the game devs ban you from online play temporarily. But that's usually in the first year of a hot game.

I read something about this last night.

As someone mentioned, a 4g is cheap enough, I'll that route. I want to try out Battlefield 3.

You can now purchase a 4GB system and then purchase a 250GB hard drive for less than the 250GB system. The only thing is that when you start up a game, you'll be prompted to select where you want to save your game.
