  • Asus Laptops?

I need to replace this 5yr old piece-of-shit desktop and decided to go with a laptop this time. I'm planning to use it primarily as a desktop, with my current wireless mouse/keyboard, Klipsch 2.1 & Samsung 32" monitor set-up. I may "undock" it and use it as a laptop occassionally, but it'll mostly sit on my desk. I've got a work laptop and Ipad 2 that I'll use more often when I want portability.

So I saw this Asus A53SV-NH51 laptop on Newegg and I jumped on it. I don't know shit about computers and have never heard of this brand, but the basic specs looked good, so I went for it. Got it with a 2yr extended warranty for just under $700 shipped.

I don't do any gaming, just basic internet use (Youtube, DFWM, bill paying & porn, not necessarily in that order), and I'm thinking that this should be a pretty good unit for the money. I was VERY tempted to go the baller route and pick up a Mac, but for what I plan to use it for, I thought the Mac was just overkill for roughly twice the money. They are fuckin cool though.

So does anyone have any input on Asus laptops? Does this thing have any obvious limitations that I may have overlooked? Or does it look like a pretty good deal? I'd like to know before I get it tomorrow and start using it, in case I should consider returning it for some reason.

    Thanks in advance.

Great laptops imo, alot of my friends use the 73s (for the gaming aspect). I've heard funny things about ASUS rma's, so if your warranty is from newegg than good job.

Looking at the specs, it looks like a pretty damn good deal.

I have been real impressed with ASUS as of late.

They are one of the few computer companies that seem to listen to their customers and give updates to their products.

They have damn good customer service IMO and I can't complain about them not using their own parts.

I have one, and it has been pretty solid so far. I see an occassional flicker or line on the screen though. Don't know what that is about.

That's cool, glad you got the 'don't shut off' issue sorted out

I'm hurting for a new lappy myself, just hard to justify when I use the work unit 90% of the time. Hell I've got some flavor of Debian linux installed on my Dell 700m right now, basically just use it as a paperweight / flash-enabled browser

I highly doubt you will be disaapointed... My only issue is now wanting the UX31... think Mac Air book.

A word of advice. If it's going to primarily be used as a desktop (not be carried around) leave it plugged in and pull the battery out of it that way your battery will stay good.

Thanks for the tip! I'd never thought of that.
