  • So I'm looking to get a Mac.... Which one?

    So I write Windows based software for a living and I'm REALLY thinking about getting into the iOS world. However, to do so I believe I need a Mac. Now the question.... which freak'n one?!?! I've dodged the "M" word for almost 20 years now and have completely lost track of what each machine does, it's value, do/don't get, etc. I'd LIKE to have a laptop I suppose but are they powerful enough? Hell, I don't even know what is required for Mac Development work! rofl.... Any of you yahoo's know anything about these weird 1 button mouse things?!?!

    Well do you want a laptop? Or do you want a desktop?

    I've got a 10' 13inch mbp, but I just use it for itunes sync and mail now. my imac is nieces now also.

    Pretty much, pick your max price and laptop/desktop and go from there. You can use whatever mouse you like on them aswell.

      To write for iOS you will need a mac to compile your app and submit it. Stupid ass Apple regulations. Most iOS app developers buy the cheap mac mini - http://www.apple.com/macmini/ to do their final compile/submission.

        You really don't need a Mac, you just need OS X. $30 (for the retail disc) and a little work and you can install it on a PC.

        And if you like Visual Studio or any decent IDE, you'll hate XCode.

          I love my mac mini server/media center.

          The new, smaller Mac mini with the M4 or M4 Pro chip. Built for Apple Intelligence. Now with front and back ports. And the first carbon neutral Mac.

            Buy a used 2010 or newer Macbook Pro 13, 15, or 17 and call it a day unless you have the money laying around to get a new one (Microcenter in Richardson has the best prices on Macbook Pros of all the retailers I've searched). I bought the 13" because its lightweight and has a VERY long battery runtime..but the speakers on it are pretty limited and it only comes with 2 USB ports. The newest ones have either the I5 or the I7 processor. The new Mini does NOT come with an optical drive built in..don't know if you would care about that but it would be a deal breaker for me. And if you like Winblows...you'll be happy to know that there are multiple ways of running whatever flavor of Windows you want on them (I run Win7 64 bit Home Premium thru Boot Camp on mine).

              Just to add to the Mac Mini comment, you can always add an external optical drive. I hate that they got rid of it, makes no sense to me and the only thing I like about it is that the Mini is a little bit skinnier now.

                Also, if you have other computers on the network you could just share the optical drive and access it that way.

                  Great responses ya'll. Thanks! I'll look into the Mini's. I've been scouring Craig's List all morning looking for a good deal. If anyone has a cheapy Mac laying around that would suffice for some dabbling in the xCode world let me know. I want to see this environment first, especially after the "you'll hate xCode" response..... I did NOT enjoy coding from scratch back in the day......

                    Well, it's a slight improvement over a text editor, but not much. It's between Eclipse and a text editor.

                      I pick up used Intel Macbooks on Craigslist frequently for anywhere from 80-200 or so bucks that would do what your wanting (if you want a portable computer). Anything made after 2006 (Core 2 Duo) will run the latest Mac OS-X Lion.

                        Its not as bad as people say, and if you have any coding experience it should be pick up and go somewhat. When I lived in wisconsin, my job paid the registration for me and I had to learn it. It wasn't that bad.

                          I'm just going to keep it simple, if you want more input - just say so. I'd recommend giving Macs a real chance these days with a modern/nice platform. You may get converted and have the best both worlds.

                            Darren, are you rather savvy with virtual machines?
                            Might want to take a stab at getting a Lion or Snow Leopard VM up and running to get your feet wet before you make that purchase.

                              Objective-C is garbage. XCode is garbage. It's just a step up from a text editor.

                              And enjoy methods with more than a couple of parameters!
                              Java/C#:
                              Code:
                              Foo foo = new Foo();
                              foo.DoSomething(arg1, arg2);
                              Objective-C:
                              Code:
                              Foo foo = [[Foo init] alloc];
                              [foo doSomething:arg1 arg2:arg2];
