  • AMD Bulldozer and F@H

I was thinkin about going BD until I read this!

    http://www.hitechleg...topic&pid=26370

    Amd-fx-8150-bulldozer F@H at stock speeds.

Regular SMP work unit (7143 project) - 13698.9ppd

    Bigadv work unit (2685 project) - 13859.2ppd

So between 13,500 and 14,000 at stock, which is right where it's positioned - around the PPD of a 2500K. Based on power consumption compared to the fact that this performs right alongside the 2500K, no person that focuses on distributed computing should touch these with a ten foot pole (unless they have free electricity). Overclocked to 4.5ghz the power consumption on

Bulldozer rises to 450w A 2600k overclocked to the same speed uses about 275w.

It uses a lot of electricity.

Also the Zambezi Bulldozer doesn't match a 2500k in single thread applications, and you can overclock the 2500k i5 even better. Moreover it is also now $179.99 only an idiot would go buy one. If you want to look at a review that is pretty intensive check here.

Perhaps the most hotly-anticipated launch in 2011, AMD’s FX processor line-up is finally ready for prime time. Does the company’s new Bulldozer architecture have what it takes to face Intel’s Sandy Bridge and usher in a new era of competition?

In multithread render apps it kills the i5's and matches Intel's flagship i7. It's just configured for architecture not yet utilized.

I say give it time and I would really like to see benches on windows 8 compared to windows 7 due to the better scheduler.

That is also what I suspect. Clearly the BD is not an optimized chip, it seems like it was rushed. But the facts are in the specs. It has more power than any processor on the market, it just isn't utilized/fully optimized. Several of the AMD engineers also felt this way, that it was rushed. I think future more optimized chips will prove the architecture.

I am not saying no, the problem is that its for today, not 1-2 years down the road. I bought the 1090T six core thinking "hey ill end up using it in the future"; but you end up upgrading in the future anyway.

What I'm saying is it is actually faster than most any intel in software that utilizes it. I'm sure the next revisions will be worth the money.

Or if software companies would actually start to utilize our hardware more efficiently we would be seeing these upgrades now

The original Phenom CPU's didn't perform as well as expected, but the Phenom II's are solid performers, I don't expect the BD line to be any different.
