EDIT:
AT&T's method of tethering detection has been settled.
AT&T is monitoring the data traffic for the browser identification string.
You can easily change your browser identification string by following this:
Firefox has a plugin to change...
The consensus is that ATT looks for the user Agent String that the browser transmits and FF/Chome users have a way to spoof it.
Interesting reading. From what I'm gathering so far is that this isn't just an iPhone thing than? I remember a thread a few months ago talking about how the iPhone tethering app was the reason so many people were getting notified about the tethering.
If the info posed in that thread is correct, then it shouldn't matter how you're tethering. Unless you change the user agent string, you'll be caught. This also presupposes that they don't or will not do deep packet analysis.
I just got message about... "did you know tethering has an additional fee, Call ATT for more information"..
Fuckem!

You say that but if you ignore 'em and keep on, they'll change your plan.
Then I'll just switch services... The unlimited is the only thing keeping me with them.
