Wanting to build a PC for the wife and I

The dell desktop finally decided to call it quits on us. What are the suggested components these days for a desktop. It has been 2-3 years since I built one. Here are the things we will be using it for:

We will use it for:

Excel-budgeting etc
Photo Shop
Browsing the web

I will use it for:

ripping movies
storing said movies(planning on a 1-2TB HD to begin with, and expandability)
HTPC capabilities should I decide not to use me XBOX or WD TV box

So question is what are the recommended components for these needs

1) recommended motherboard(brand)

2) recommended processor that is mostly for video and some excel sheets

3) recommended power supply wattage etc

4) recommended ram(size, type, etc)

5) recommended OS these days?
