  • Video card suggestion?

I have an AMD Phenom II x3 720 2.8 GHz processor, 6 GB DDR2 (PC2-6400), and currently an ATI Radeon HD 4830 512MB. I'm looking to upgrade for BF3 and don't want to get a card that will bottleneck because of my processor. I had to upgrade my mobo/proc when I bought the 4830 because of a bottleneck. I'm just trying to not make the same mistake this time.

best card for the cash right now is the nVidia GTX 560Ti in my opinion - will run you between 230-300 depending on model/brand/features. Modern systems are less dependent on CPU and more weighted to GPU than they use to be. You will get gains for sure.

Got two 560ti's and in sli and they are great cards. Although the 1gig of memory is a downfall...

I have read there are some 1.5/2gig versions of the card coming out.

They already have 2 gig versions out. If you're not running extremely high resolutions you don't need it.

On GTA 4 I'm maxing mine out at 1920x1080....

Guys running 1.5 gig 580's are maxing them out at slightly high resolutions.

GTA4 will use as much vram as you let it, however the engine isn't very good at making use of all that ram.

Also, Crysis1 and Crysis Warhead will eat up 1gb of vram at 1080p depending on your config. And you really want 2gb of vram for 2560x1600, 1.5gb really is gimping their flagship card.

The 560ti will work pretty well on BF3, you shouldn't have a problem with it.

I am running a 6950 2GB version (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814161372) and ran the alpha with not problems at all, 50+ fps the entire time (granted that was alpha). I plan on grabbing another one to crossfire with before the BF3 release though.

1920x1080 is as high as 99% of monitors in use today go, and it runs just fine on them. That's kind of my point.

I seem to be getting 25-35 FPS on LOW with this EVGA 560 Ti. I even get dips in combat down to 11 FPS.

edit: I put the 4830 back in and it is running the game better than the 560 Ti. Any ideas?

Would my PSU have anything to do with it? It is a 500w Thermaltake dual rail with (+12v1) 18a and (+12v2) 17a. The card requires 500w and "30a on the +12v rail."

Get a bigger PSU. They're relatively cheap nowadays. If the card requires a 500w, then that's the minimum it will operate at, get a 700w or so.

It's possible that it's underpowered. Microcenter has some very nice Antec High Current gamer models for a heck of a deal right now.

620 Watt and 48A on the 12v rail

650 watt and 38A on each 12v rail

out of curiosity, did you uninstall the ati drivers properly prior to installing the 560?

I didn't use a driver sweeper but I did remove from Device Manager. I grabbed a 650w Antec and bumped my processor to 3.2Ghz. Now, I'm going to remove the drivers correctly/reinstall and see where that gets me.

I uninstalled from Device Manager, rebooted in safe mode, used driver sweeper, restarted, and installed latest stable drivers from Nvidia. Now, when I start a game I get an error message saying "Display driver NVIDIA Windows Kernal Mode Driver, Version 280.26 stopped responding and has successfully recovered".

Edit: It seems BF3 won't let me OC my processor so everything's running fine now on High. Thanks for the help all.
