Edit: Thread title change
My router all of a sudden loses a signal after about 10 feet. Is this a sign it is toast?

Try w/ other devices too to eliminate any possibility that it's your phone.

So what the hell is going on? Is this more than likely a hardware issue or a software issue? It is fine for about 10 feet and then I can make one more step and it just drops the wifi connection.

I assume you've done the OTA for it that has to bee done on Wifi and or rebooted.
The update apply a newer radio as well as unlocks the wireless data speeds.

Bryan, what do you mean by OTA? The phone has worked fine with the wifi router up until now and I have rebooted both the phone and the router.
Not sure what you are talking about with the radio.
Gheeeeeez this is like learning how to use a computer all over again.
