Help with replacement power cord on laptop

My son busted the power cord to his laptop (actually his step sister fell on his laptop and busted the power cord when he was at his father's house) and I need to get a new one since his dad feels he shouldn't have to replace it.

What do I need to match when looking for a new one? Brand? or DC/amp? Do I have to get a Toshiba brand or will an off brand that has the same DC/amp rating work?

Just need to know what to avoid so he doesn't fry his laptop.

Ebay, you can find some cheap ones. Although I've had 3 fry out on my Dell. I think I paid $9. A brand new one would cost me $90. This was for the whole charger though. What kind of laptop does he have?



Does it have the detachable power cord?? If so you could get the cord at a local electronics store. There's one in Arlington, off 303 and Collins, that has all kinds of spare parts really cheap.

Pretty much all PC laptops have a universal plug now. Apple obviously is different. You can just swing by bestbuy, walmart, fry' s and all will be the same. But that shit is around 70 - 90 bucks.

you'll need to match the model number of the laptop to the right adapter end.

iGo is sold at radio shack and they have universal power supplies that you replace the ends to match the brand/model. Not cheap, but not super expensive.

You can also go on ebay and most people will have model numbers that are compatible with the different power supplies.

Is it the power cord or the "brick" assembly? The cords are generic - the bricks are more specific. If an OEM original is outrageous expensive - look into an "iGo Juice" - they are a universal system for power supplies. You pretty much just buy the correct tip to match the device you have.

I bought a new one over ebay for my HP for less than $10. HP wanted about $70 for one.

Just go to ebay and do a search for your model number and power cord. Something should pop up.
