You have to complete Nocturnal's Daedric quest. You have to be at least level 10 to start though.

Nocturnal's Shrine is located northeast of Leyawiin, and you can see where it is exactly on this map:

Here is a link to website that has a lot of info for the game

You'll be out looking for some root or plant or something and stumble across a cave, sweet I'll just check this out real quick. Go inside and get lost wandering around for an hour, find a man trapped in the cave who needs you to get something that should be easy to find and bring it back, ok sure I'll just do that real quick. Get to town to retrieve key and meet a man who only needs a small favor, ok sure I'll do that real quick. Meanwhile it's been 3 days and you haven't gotten anything done, lol.
This is the exact reason i couldn't play fallout3 or any of the games like this. I'm always afraid if i don't do "xxx" quest i'm going to miss out on something really good. Then next thing you know i have 20 quest and nothing done. Drives me nuts.

Picking locks is so frustrating... before I ever tried to pick one I had somewhere near 30 lockpicks, then I tried to pick an "Easy" lock and used ALL OF THEM and still didn't open the damn thing.
To join the thieves guild, when you meet the black guy, he should tell you and three other people that you need to steal some shit from some guys desk, and the person that does it first, gets to join the guild. You can't buy lockpicks from him until you do that.

Picking locks can be frustrating, but it's not that hard once you get used to it.

Cool, thanks. I'm on a quest right now that requires I pick a lock to get into some spys personal info(I think), and I'm stuck because I have no way into the stupid chest. I'll have to go join the thieves guild tonight.

There used to be a way to dupe if I remember correctly. Something about dropping an item and swingin your weapon at the same time then it would drop two of them. You might check that forum I linked you to and search for "duping" and then you could dupe lockpicks. I duped like 6,000 skulls and filled an entire room with them just for the lols. Also if you drop a pencil it will float so if you dupe a shitload and you drop them strategically you can build a "floating" bridge that you can walk on.

Is there an "ultimate" character to play as?

I don't think the characters are built that simply, but I'd imagine anyone with high magicka(wtf) is going to be a bad ass.

I'm thinking more along the lines of a custom class build. Starting off with race, then class, and then birth sign...

I'm guessing something with good endurance (because if affects everything) and then resistance to magic.

                        Here is the cheat.
If you pick up multiple "scrolls" you can click on them in your inventory as if you were going to use them and instead drop any item that is at 100% quality and it will drop multiples of that item in relation to however many scrolls you had.

I never really liked dicking around with magic. I would always focus on strength, agility, speed, and of course sneak. I have one character where I can literally be standing directly in front of somebody, crouch into sneak mode, and them not be able to see me which means I can get critical attacks from anywhere. I could run on foot as fast as I could on horseback, and jump onto single story houses from the ground. Of course I had items that made me 60% invisible, I found armor that made me 70% to all fire, frost, and bolt magic. Items are what will make you the ultimate character. Speed and agility are the best attributes to work on IMO.

Yeah but its fun to be able to pop off a spell that kills everyone within a 20 ft radius.

One of my favorites, I'm awaiting that and the new Batman but I'm currently playing through Playthrough 2 in Borderlands.
