  • need a new router, would like to stream video. options?

So I have had fios for a long time but now that I have moved to Pensacola and living on base, all that is available is the shitty local cable provider so I need a router.

I have my desktop hard wired but my 360 will be wireless. I want to either stream video to it or to another device I will find late. I am trying to decide between getting just the typical. Linksys wrt54gs and using dd-wrt or getin one of the nicer newer n routers from them. Opinions? Hard wiring really isn't an option since its a rental.

Are you trying to use 802.11n? If not, wrt54G...with dd-wrt

Just so you know, your first sentence makes no sense.

Yeah, a simple WRT54G will be fine - the likely problem will always be from your ISP in that situation. I remember when I was enlisted our simple phones would not work right. Lowest bidder stuff.

Yea I got the "15mpbs" package. Tested it on speedtest when I got home, damn thing barely runs 3mbps down a .8mpbs up. I'm gonna raise hell about the speed as soon as U-verse comes to town to get them to cancel my contract.

I just replaced a Linksys WRT54G that died on me after 9 years of service. It ran great and no problems streaming with a 10Mbps cable connection. Streaming actually worked ok with the 3Mbps DSL line I had previously.

Not to hijack the thread but is that Dlink or the Lynksys a good router for gaming? I need to get a new router to put behind my shitacular ATT Uverse 2wire modem/router. I run 2 PS3's on wireless and a 360 hardwired plus laptops and stuff. I was thinking a WRT54GS but I know its older technology. Went to Frys and some some cool ones that also served as a NAS with their own 2.5" hard drives.

Uverse uses 2wire? I thought that was strictly DSL hardware

Generally speaking it is all acceptable hardware/software for basics that a home network requires. The key is to just do a cursory search for reviews on the hardware and try to filter out the idiots. Some products/organizations do have buggy software and that's where the real problem is going to reside.

What I do know is Cisco is going through a slight re-org right now and is dumping some of their consumer products. This is one place I'd recommend against a Linksys product (new) at this time. Nothing is confirmed the last I checked and we're more interested in their business products - however, Cisco has not really released everything -publicly- as of this time so I'd be cautious. Especially with the other great products out there.

To clarify for those who care - this does not affect 95% of what is used in the business world...plenty of articles about it out there if you want to read about it.

I ran a linksys wrt54g with various firmware for years.

I upgraded to an Asus RTN-16 and running tomato usb on it. I'm using with comcast 20mb-30mb burst service and get 18-19mb down and 1.8 up on speed tests. Those uverse routers are crap for multi connect protocols like bit torrent by design
