  • Legal way to download music?

I guess this is a long shot, but its been a long time since I've kept up with all that music industry lawsuit bullcrap. I had heard somewhere, that they were about to give up and stop pursuing lawsuits against illegal downloading. Never found out if its true.

So is there some way to download music (for free) these days that is not considered to be theft? I abhor thievery in all its forms and I will not be a part of anything even remotely resembling theft. But I had heard that there are legal ways to get some free music these days.

I did. I'm referring to free trials and things of that nature. Besides that things change, man. You just may not know about it yet.

Nothing is going to change that's going to legalize the pirating of music.

As for free trials, Zune does a thing called the Zune Pass where you get to download all of the music you want for a month and then at the end of the month you get to keep 15 songs; it costs $15 a month (the price of the songs you get to keep) and you get to keep 15 songs every months.

If it's free, it's probably not legal.

itunes gives away free music all the time.. it's just normally not anyone I want to listen to. I think amazon's music store does as well.

Closest I've found is you basically rent music. For our running mp3 player we use Rhapsody, so for 15 bucks a month you can generally listen to whatever you want.

Trick is you never own the music (there is an option to buy), so once your subscription expires...that's that.

There is Pandora, and a slew of others. But they are basically internet radio stations. You really can't pick specific songs, make playlists and so forth.
