there is no cons to rooting, and many pros. you get to flash better working roms for your phone, get to do stuff you couldn't before. just rooting itself isn't much to do, its when you get into flashing roms is where you have to read and be careful. and once you root you can overclock the processor and make the phone run way faster. check xda-developers.com on the evo forums and just read read read. most of the time if you mess up you can fix it. so have no fear.
The HTC Evo 4G is Sprint's flagship Android smartphone for the second half of 2010. Originally shipping with Android 2.1 (Eclair), it has since been updated to Android 2.3.3 (Gingerbread). The Evo 4G borrows a number of hardware components from the legendary HTC HD2, including the 4.3" WVGA TFT...

So basically what I'm getting from your post is that there is really nothing to gain from just rooting. Flashing roms is when the fun starts, correct?
sent from htc EVO, the iCrap killer.
not necessarily, some great apps in the market require root. like titanium backup for saving your apps when flashing and setcpu for overclocking, rom manager is another good one. and im sure there's more but those are the main ones i use. to just root and nothing else doesn't really do anything but just sit there unless you go in to flashing new kernels for overclocking or a whole rom itself. and cyanogen mod has a step by step for installing the newest version of android on your evo. cm7 is the gingerbread port.
Cyanogenmod 7(CM7) is my preferred rom w/ Launcher Pro instead of ADW that comes w/ CM7. I'm testing different dialers atm because the AOSP on inCM7 has the HOLD button on the screen an I always put ppl on hold by accident.

So i just download that rom to the sd card and then go into the recovery menu and select it. The phone will do the rest?
