router recommendation....

I'm pretty sure my router and dsl modem is fried. All lights are solid green on the router and only 2 on the modem. Reconnected,pwr cycled, isolated router, and still couldn't get dsl modem to work. I fucked up and hooked them up and put them on top shelf of closet..bad idea, cuz I'm sure heat got to them. I did this when I 1st moved in house to get it up and running and was not thinking.

Any recommendations on a linksys router? Reason is that I like the user interface when accessing the router.

I've had zero issues with my Linksys WRT54GS, but I'm also using dd-wrt firmware, not OEM. I've bumped up the transmit voltage to 100mW, which is significantly higher than OEM transmit power with very few errors. And I hammer it with huge site back ups over FTP, VoIP, and Netflix streaming. Had it for 2 years now and still going strong. Of course, I realize that most people now are now using N networks. Any Linksys router should be good. I've never had issues with Linksys/Cisco.

The one I had was the WRT300N I believe. It had a very good range of wifi, which I loved. Was able to use it everywhere around house,garage, and certain distance outside. Will the wrt54 be able to do that as well?

I don't know about the OEM firmware, but my Linksys WRT54GS with dd-wrt will allow me to jump on a neighbor friend of mine's open network and he lives 2 houses down from me. I get a '-48dBm signal from about 25 ft. away. That's about a 42 SNR if you subtract the signal from the noise floor. That's excellent signal strength for streaming HD content or VOIP, much less Internet browsing and Email. DLNA steaming works good as well.

I would think it would say to use the stable one vs the beta. New to this ddwrt stuff. Which should I use? Don't do anything before you read the Wiki instructions. Not following them to the letter can result in a bricked router. I'll provide you a link. First, post the exact model number of your router. And check to see it it has a version number, i.e., Linksys WRT54GS v7.2 And I'll point you in the right direction and check on the firmware build version that's most recommended.

FYI - The SP1 builds that are listed as stable in the database are often old builds with poor wireless performance. The recommended beta builds in the router database are usually 95% correct. They are listed as Beta, but have been thoroughly tested before added to the database. The database, just like some of the older wiki pages, aren't updated as often as they should be. This is just due to the enormity of information and firmware contained on dd-wrt site. That along with it being open source and they are providing it for free.

I believe that article suggest using the web build. However, most generic builds are updated using the web interace. Most of the micro-mini builds use the TFTP method. I used TFTP, but I have a different model and that was what was recommended at the time. It's all based on what chipset you have and how much flash memory you have. I would just do whatever the wiki article suggests. That's the best bet. It's written by the people who maintain the databases.
