My home laptop is an HP(HDX18) and I haven't had any problems that I haven't caused. Going on 2 years now.
I carry an Acer Aspire One for my job and love it.

Just wondering about those of you with the problematic HPs - Are they store bought or ordered direct from HP(custom built)?

I haven't had any problems with my HP G60 Notebook or Compaq Presario Desktop. I did have a mother board issue with an older HP Pavilion DV6700. I actually had several issues with the two previous Sony Vaio laptops I had. You can find consumer complaints and issues with just about any brand laptop.

My first Acer got skipped across the ground on accident. It still worked for another 2 months before the plates of the HDD went to clattering.

this HP has been knocked off the arm of the couch no fewer than 10 times... it's also been carried by the screen more than a few times

yeah, I've heard a lot of bad about them AFTER I bought hers

maybe bashing it around a little has seasoned it and prepared it for a healthy life... it hasn't been pampered at all. It's on a good 16hrs a day usually.

I had a feeling you were going to post that - it seems that the Dell and HP polarize customers like Ford and Chevy. After my personal experience with Dell, it would take a miracle for me to spend my money on another one of their products. And I'm not saying that my HP is the end-all, be-all badass that will never break. But so far the HP has outlasted the Dell by a long shot.

It is, just for the record when it comes to electronics (and this is not directed AT you. Just the thread in general) avoid brand preference if at all possible.

For instance I have a Dell from 2001 or so, that's been to Bosnia, Croatia, Italy, Iraq (1.5 years in that dust), Uzbekistan (6 or 9 months in that mess), Kuwait (DOHA was worst then Iraq I swear) and so on. It's been squished in C-130 cargo loads, I've dropped it off the back of the ramp once and the SOB just keeps on ticking. I swear you can just twist it in half or something and it would just keep going.

I got a Dell to work with a few years ago, it was crap.

I've had this flip flop of quality/design on nearly any electronic/PC/Laptop..etc. Just like the Nvidia/ATI argument - buy what's best in your budget - at the time - don't buy a name.

Also, IMHO - 500 is good starting point for laptops. 350 is real iffy unless you come across a really great deal.

At this point I said screw them all and got a Macbook Pro, that I've bumped up to 8GB or RAM and am going to upgrade the drive on as well.
