I saw those HP Compaqs in constantly for service when I worked at Best Buy.
Most every person I've run into in the past 3-4 years that owns an HP laptop (HP builds Compaqs these days) has had some kind of hardware failure. My HP had the motherboard replaced twice under warranty, my roommate's motherboard failed out of warranty, and a buddy that bought a Compaq similar to that to handle some programs that wouldn't work on his Mac has had nothing but problems.
That said, it's entirely possible that you'd never have an issue if you surf/use it responsibly. But I'd run, not walk, from any HP-built laptop until I see otherwise.
My current lappy is an Acer Aspire 5315 that's prolly 3-4yrs old. I bought it new but was "new old stock" so I got a good deal on it. It's not power house but it works everytime.
For what you're wanting to do, I'm sure it would suit you fine. If you're unsure about it, go to Microcenter and try it out. You could also give us a price point to work with and if you're willin to get a Re-certified unit.

Not really stuck at that price point.... but not looking to spend a whole lot more.
btw its 12 dollars cheaper to have it shipped than to pay tax and pick it up in store LOL
They're comparable. The Dell might do single tasks quicker, the Acer has more ram, a better web cam but only has one speaker where the Dell has two.
They're really about the same. I'd suggest hittin Micro Center and trying the display models and see which you like better. They're in the same class though, fwiw.
