  • Suggestions for cheap bench?

So I've been to Dicks and Academy so far checking out some cheap benches. I found a couple that are in my price range, usually no more than $150. The problem is I really would like safety bars on the sides when I'm lifting and haven't found one yet with this feature. Any place I should check out?

I know Greg from Lockout had a bench for sale.
Not sure if it had the bars or not... plus it might be sold by now.
Get a hold of him and ask or maybe he will chime in.

I take it you won't have a spot...don't even mess with bench then. Just go straight dumbbell presses

You can still get a good workout without a spotter. Even if you don't go to balls out muscle failure on bench you can still yield good results.

True, but you can get a better one, and a safer one with dumbells

Understood. I have just always not used collars when lifting heavy w/ no spot. That way you can easily tip the bar and weights will slide right off. Just got to make sure no walls are close. Ask me how I know... However it is nice to have a spot since it gives you more confidence during a set.

That's actually not a bad idea. I'll give that a try too.

I for once completely agree with Ruffdaddy. You can always do no collars to dump the weight at failure but it's a really uncomfortable experience.

Forgot, but another good use for no collars is to see if the bar is even when doing reps. Without a spotter it is hard at times to tell what's going on especially when strug-galing with the last few reps.
If you do go to failure and are trapped you just need to simply brace your body and lock your arms while keeping the bar at your chest when the weight falls off the bar.

Whoa! Agreeing with JD?!? Haha jk we can't always have different views.

And tipping weight is an alternative...albeit a pretty dangerous one when you start hitting the heavier weight. I've seen some bad stuff happen in powerlifting when weight gets unintentionally dumped, but maybe not as much when you see it coming.

There's also the smith machine...but I'm not sure you'll find one that cheap without a touch of luck.

There are places that sell used gym equipment, which us much better quality than the chincy stuff at the mega stores. I know of the one off of 35 and Hebron in Lewisville, surely there is one close to you.
