  • Topic: Excuses

So, I've become quite good at making up excuses for a lot of shit throughout the years. The worst one is definitely about going to the gym. I've had a gym membership for a bit over a year and I've probably gone 30 times in that span.

Some excuses used at "I left my water bottle at home/work," or "I drank too much last night and was a bit hungover in the morning but felt fine throughout the rest of the day, but I'll skip out tonight as well."

My favorite one is "I missed the day I said I was going to go, so I'll start going again next Monday." That one typically gets stuck in a loop for awhile.

So what do you guys do to stay motivated and not start making up excuses just because you don't feel like putting an hour in. I know, I know "you just need to go, Geof." Easier said than done. I've even got pictures of my obese ass on my phone to try and motivate me, but I've moved them to a hidden folder so that they are out of sight (mainly so nosy friends don't point and laugh).

I told myself towards the end of last year that this is the year, 2013, where I better myself in all aspects of my life, yet I've done little to accomplish that goal. I know that's probably too lofty a goal, but I at least want to better health/fitness.
How do we forget ourselves? How do we forget our minds?

That's another thing I cannot do. Ever since I blew my knee out a couple of years ago, I can't run. And that's not an excuse. I guess I sort of use it as an excuse not to go to the gym though "oh look at fatty walking on the treadmill hahaha! walk fatty! walk fat boy!" is what they're saying, I know it is.

Surround yourself with other fitness oriented individuals.
Once you get in the habit of going and making progress towards your goals, it's rather simple and becomes innate behavior.
My advice it to set a large goal, but also set smaller goals that you can and will achieve.
Once you start achieving those smaller goals, you will have all the motivation you need to reach your larger goal without failure.

That is the exact reason I got out of personal training...tired of hearing the excuses.

Bukkake night at the M. residence again, huh?

OK, not going to derail the thread...

I have been bad about this since high school. I was in powerlifting in high school and was in the weight room and on the track every day. I have put on 16 lbs since then, get winded from a short jog, and probably can't lift near what I used to thanks to back surgery. I have no doubt had I kept a regular workout routine, I would have herniated a disc in my lower back.

I started this week on the paleo diet, getting a membership at the YMCA tomorrow (we only have one other gym in town and it is a snap fitness filled with herbalife douche bags). I am feeling better thanks to the modified diet and I am hoping I can transfer that feeling to regular workouts. I will also be purchasing a road cycle soon. My big goal for this year is to ride the cotton patch challenge later this year.

Yup. This is what I use due to my back. Low impact. Just bought one since I haven't worked out since the apartment gym went bye bye.

x3 on the Elliptical, it's relatively low impact, and weather can't be used as an excuse like it can be for jogging, bicycling, rollerblading, etc.

The mirror and being single are plenty motivation for me, as is how good I feel during and after a good workout. Get truly honest with yourself, and if you truly want to change, get your ass in the gym. Just as easy as it is to get into a rut skipping, it's just as easy to get into the habit of going. Once you start feeling better and seeing results, it gets easier to get off the couch.

When I first started lifting the key for me was to always hit the gym on the way home from work. It is so much easier to do that than to get home and comfortable, and then motivate to leave again. There were actually a few times that I ended up at the gym on my planned days of rest, my mind went on autopilot on the drive home, and I ended up at the gym instead.

Take it easy for the first couple months, push yourself a little, but don't go balls out. Let your body get acclimated to the new stresses, you don't have to be to sore to move to be making progress, and you'll be less likley to get demotivated because it "sucks" so much.

Oh, and I know all about letting hangovers get in the way of working out, I spent the last two years in that cycle, and my body and motivation severely suffered. Even back in my hey days I skipped more than a few workouts due to feeling shitty, and the irony is sweating through it is the best "cure."

Cut down on your drinking, both in how much and how often, and you will get into shape ALOT quicker.

I broke a cycle this morning of being out of the gym for over a year and a half and it shows, EVERYWHERE. I forced my ass out of the top bunk and after getting dressed and a short walk to the closest gym; I was on a treadmill at 0430. After a 15 hour day time to get to sleep and get up tomorrow and do it all over again. I cannot succumb to my excuses. In fact, I really need to make it to the gym by 0330 instead.
Fuck you. We're going to Costco.
