  • Supplements for dummies?

So I've finally decided to get rid of the ole gut and get back in shape again. This time around, i dont have the luxury of time/space/pool to do the triathlon training regimen, seeing as I am stuck in the confines of an oil rig the majority of the year. I started working out and cutting back on soda and eating smaller portions about a month ago, and have lost about 10 pounds and am feeling pretty good. I currently weigh about 228 pounds and i'm 6'2. I'm really not concerned with losing weight, mostly just getting cut like i used to be (7 years ago LOL)

I would like to try some kind of creatine or muscle milk kind of supplement thing while avoiding the whole cocktail of supplements that most people seem to take. The main thing that's frustrating me is my biceps, i've always had small biceps and very large triceps. even though I curl 65lb barbells, i still have biceps smaller then dudes that can barely do 40lbs. any recommendations on a SINGULAR supplement to take? I plan on ordering something, probably from lockout to take with me the next time i go offshore and hit the gym hard and see if i get any additional gains compared to what i've been getting without supplements.

Although my response is not supplement related, I've always had the best gains doing straight barbell curls. No amount of curls in and any other formations have yielded better results for me.

thats what i do. I've been doing alot of straight barbell curls, the different variations of press, and a ton of planking. the planking has been making a big difference already.

lol.. thats kind of how i feel about it. But i figure its worth a shot to see if it does anything for me physically or psychologically. I just dont want to order something that everybody thinks is terrible or something.

Step 1. Get your diet in check.

Supplements help but are not needed for weight loss. It's all in your diet. If you want to loose weight fast do HIIT(high intensity interval training) stuff like Insanity/p90x. You can do both in a small area. I take creatine, protein powder, and a pre-workout(anything that gives you an energy buzz) but none of it it necessary. Cut out the sugary stuff and drink more water. If you cant give up sodas all together just make sure you drink an equl amount of water to any soda you drink. 20oz soda drink 20oz of water.
The biggest difference your gonna get is going to be from diet, hiit, and drinking more water.

as i said in the first post, i'm not really worried about losing weight. i just want to experiment with taking a supplement for muscle gain/strength. I'm already on a pretty good plan I think, i've been seeing some gains but i just want to see if i'd notice more gains with a supplement.

Best bang for the buck is going to be protein and creatine.

yes, i've gathered that much. but there's thousands of brand names out there, and most of the reviews are obviously written by the publicity depts of these companies. I was hoping to get something like this: "brand X works great, i've been using it for X long and i've seen real gains" or "Brand X sucks, i got man tits and grew a vagina on it like Jester" etc.

Optimum nutrition makes good quality stuff and they're usually the cheapest brand. Although it's not the best tasting stuff out there. Universal brand creatine is good quality, cheap, and works. Universal is made with creapure which is some of the best creatine out there.
I'd suggest buying everything you can from lockoutsupplements. I posted a link to bb.com because lockout is "out of stock" in the larger quantities of Universal brand creatine.
