  • Lifting for weightloss.

I don't have access to all the info I had saved on another computer, so I just pulled 1 study for now, in order to continue the discussion from the other thread.
    This link:
    http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/11932584

is a brief synopsis of a study the concludes that lifting heavier for lower reps creates a higher EPOC than does lower weights and higher reps, given similar groups of lifters. EPOC is Excess Post-exercise Oxygen Consumption, which is just a fancy way of tracking the effect a workout has, after you stop working out. This study leads to 2 conclusions in favor of lifting heavier:
    1) the metabolic effect of heavier lifting is greater, and in turn the lifter burns more calories when NOT exercising
    2) being stronger will make burning calories easier, based on both the increased workload allowed the stronger lifter, and the increased metabolic function of a body with more muscle, which burns more calories in a resting state than does fat.

There are benefits to high rep work, especially when considering specific joints or movement patterns, but scientifically, lifting heavier promotes a leaner physique than lifting lighter.

When I get back to a normal routine, I'll link up some more studies discussing the benefit of different rest periods on both cardiovascular response and musculature response.

Pubmed is a great resource for anyone looking to learn more about the effects of work load and food sources on a body, but can be very technical.

Running wind sprints will put an even higher load on the body than heavy lifting. The problem is most people won't do it because it hurts to breathe hard.

You want to burn more fat, then get out there and bike and run like a man possessed and lift weights.

Dude, we get it, you run and bike, and now you're the second coming of Jesus and Mohammed rolled into one.

Earth shattering news for you, there are people who run, bike AND lift, not named AnthonyS.

I run and lift and thanks tex.
Ive been doing sprints along with lifting 5 days a week. 30 sec-1 min of full sprint (12-15mph) followed by 4-4.5 min (8-9mph pace) supposed to release more growth hormones.

Stopped doing 5-10 mile jog/runs..way too much cardio and I could tell I was losing mass..doing 20-40 min now..

My schedule is settling down, so I'll get back to posting some more detailed info soon, I've got a few topics that you'll really like. I know you don't LIKE running, no matter how much you say you do. It's funny how much similar stuff you and I do, and our motivation is completely opposite.

Gee thanks. I'm just pointing out that the key to burning calories is getting the heart rate up. That makes lifting one of the poorest choices for weight loss. Sure you can do aerobic type circuits but most people do not.

Oh and fuck Muhammed by the way.

                      Depends on how many intervals.

Did you actually read the link? Do you understand that there may be information that is outside what you think is right? Come lift with me, I'll have your heart pounding out of your chest.

I really don't know why but my body has adapted for running really well...

I started out running on a 4 mph pace now 12 is as fast as the treads go in 24 hr and I still have alot more in me.

THOUGH running @ 12 pace will get your heart up IDC who you are haha! I cant keep it up for more then 2 minutes before I have to stop and slow back down to an 8 or 9.

Yes I read the synopsis. Did you forget that in your first post you wrote it is a synopsis, and that you don't have access to the entire paper?

Dud you think there might be information outside what you think is right? Or this paper?

My highest heart rates are achieved while running. I use a silly heart rate monitor and a computer to track it too. Most everyone's highest heart rates are achieved while running. It's one of the things that makes us human. I already do all the weight lifting I have time for, but thanks for the offer. I typically do a big twice a week after cycling or running.

While losing weight is possible lifting weights (the point of this paper), it will never be the best way to do it (my point).

So how am I wrong on that? And why are you bringing Muhammed and Jesus into the argument? Is it because you can't contradict that with facts? It's the oldest and lamest trick in the book. No evidence.... Then just try and discredit the opposition. That's fine, but I'm not falling for it. Obama would be proud of you though. Maybe it's all Bush's fault huh?
