I don't want something I'm going to grow out of or be sick of in 3-4 months. I'm trying to clear out my storage unit and make some $$$ on old furniture and car parts, and it looks like some things are going to change at work and I'll be working some extra hours in the next two weeks. If I wait until after christmas, I could probably have $1000-$1200 to work with.

That looks like a pretty good deal on that Trek, though I'm a shorter gentleman. 5'7.5"
My FX7.5 Disc was right at a 1000 with SPDs and cages, and it is a great bike. Hell if you can ride a 15 they clearance them all the time at Richardson. 17.5-20's are the main movers.

If you can turn a wrench this site has some sweet deals. I almosttttt pulled the trigger on a Fuji before I got mine.

    Whos your Daddy?

I got off work early today and took a trip over to RBM. I called ahead to make sure that Woody would be there and would have time to talk with me. Spent an hour talking with him, I think it might have helped a little that my dad was a very loyal customer many years ago. They have had quite a few people in my situation come in, and that they often find it comfortable to be on a road bike. I had a great experience, and will definitely be buying my bike from them when the time comes. I would like to buy before Christmas, though it may very well be January, after I work my Holiday schedule at work.

I finally found what I felt like was a good deal on a bike. After watching craigslist for a month and a half I came across this:

Stopped and checked it out after my interview today and was able to pick it up of $350. A new base allez can be picked up for $750. Not sure if I got a great deal or not, though I felt like I did, as I was about to just break down and buy a brand new bike. It seems to be in good condition for being a few years old. It sounds like the chain may be making contact with the front deraillure, should be able to be taken care of with an adjustment.

I felt that at $350, if it turns out that I'm not able to ride like I want to with my back, I shouldn't have much trouble recouping what I spent on the bike. The tubes were just replaced, and the tires were replaced recently as well. Another thing that I was excited about is the carbon seat post, that should help cut down on some of the vibration.

Adjusted the seat on my lunch break. Going take it for a spin when I get off work, just a couple of miles and see how my back handles it

Like anything, it will take a little getting used to. I love my Trek road bike.

Took it around the block a little to get a feel for it. It is very twitchy! It will definitely take some getting used to. I need to pick up a pump, the back tire is a bit soft.

What do you guys consider essentials? I need to pick up some spare tubes, as well as a floor and portable pump, looks like the bike is equipped with presta valves. I also need to pick up a helmet and a pair of shorts.

                  Any recommendations on the helmet?

Spare tube, small tool kit with tire inflator and Co2 cartridges, and water. Shorts and helmet are subjective... Get what fits you and feels good. I use a pump I got at Walmart and it does both types of valves and works good.

After my ride last Thursday, I suffered another set back from my back injury. I spent a couple of hours doing the brakes on my s-10 which I am still recovering from. I spent last weekend in bed, scheduled an appointment with my neurosurgeon and he prescribed some oral steroids. Fast forward to today, I got off work and decided I would attempt a short ride just to see if my back could handle it. I made it through the ride, same distance as the first, though there is a bit of aching in my lower back. I probably need to get the bike adjusted to my body and position on the frame before I start spending too much time on it. I guess the next 48 hpurs will tell me whether I can push forward or not. My last dose of oral steroid was this morning.

Do you think riding with your hands lower than your ass has to do anything with it? I would imagine being hunched forward could cause you pain.

I have no doubt the riding position has caused some discomfort. I wouldn't classify it as pain. I actually woke up this morning feeling better than I have since last Friday night when I aggrivated my back. So well that I went for another ride. I would say at this point I can attribute the discomfort to activating/using muscles I haven't used in a LONG time. I can definitely say the pain is not associated with the site of my surgery or the disc that was repaired, the discomfort is in a lower region in the small of my back. I wouldn't have made it across the road if I had felt any pain connected with the back injury

I haven't ridden any extended lengths yet either. We are talking sub 10 minute rides
