  • Too much protein?

Are there any negative effects from consuming too much protein? I've been tracking what I eat lately and I've noticed my protein intake is pretty damn high, higher than it probably should be. And I'm sure it's been this way for at least 18 years. I'm just wondering if I'm hurting myself or not.

What's your lean body mass and how much protein are you taking in daily?

Too much protein can be hard on the liver.

Im 6'1", @310-320 lbs....as far as muscle mass...lots of bulky muscle, esp in shoulders and legs...couldn't give you an actual measurement. As far as diet, I generally eat alot of meats and dairy. Just last night I noticed my dinner alone was @ 80+grams of protein. I don't do this on purpose...no supplements or crap like that...I just consider it a happy accident lol

BF%? That's a lotta weight at that height. I've heard 1 - 1 1/2g's per lbs for people that are in generally good health like 10-16% body fat, however if a lot of that weight is fat, you could probably get away with a little less.

If I had to guesstimate, I'd say I'm around 20-25% bf, mostly @ my midsection (beerbelly ftl) and I'm broad-shouldered and big boned. Some quick measurements: shoulders 57", chest 52", belly 56", waist 52", neck 18 1/2", wrists 7 1/2 (bony), forearms 13 1/2" biceps 16 1/2", thighs 30", calves 20", and ankles 11". Oh, and a 23 1/2" head lol. I have a fairly large muscle structure to boot, which is why I feel like I'm not in any danger due to my belief my system is putting all that protein to use, but after putting numbers to what I actually consume, I just want to make sure I'm not causing any damage, if that makes any sense.

So your lean body mass is between 240-256. At that, you're good taking in between 240g to 360g of protein a day. You could afford to lose some fat, but it's hard to go over that much protein on a normal diet.

52" waist? I would have your BF checked, I'd bet you are over 30%.

That's the government recommended allotment, which is mostly crap, imo. The generally recommended amount of daily protein intake is 1-1.5g of protein per pound of lean body mass as long as you are lifting.

I take in about 240-265 grams a day myself. I lift 5 days a week and drink 1 1/2 gallons of water daily. My measurements were damn near identical to yours 17 weeks ago before I started to get my ass into shape 60#s ago

I can't remember what my measurements are but I'm 6' 1" and at 240lbs I was 26% BF and like you I carry is all in my torso. Currently I'm 220lbs and 17% BF. No disrespect, but you're probably a bit higher than that 25 you're thinking. If you can, I'd set an appointment with a dietician (SP?). That is a lot of weight to carry around.

60g per day is to maintain for a 2000 calorie/day diet for average people. At your size...you're not an average person. Without pics, you're either a blob or a tank. Hopefully closer to a tank.
