  • Advice for teens

My 12 and 13 yr old sons have expressed an interest in getting a weight set and working out here at home.

Any advice on how to get them started the right way, what equipment is good to start with on a limited budget, etc?

I tried a search and didnt find any good threads for noobs. Thanks for any words of wisdom.

The main goal I think is to help lose weight and be healthy and I'm sure start looking nicer for the ladies

    Thanks!

Low impact and proper form. Biggest thing is to feed 'em right.

Tell them to hit the track and walk/run a couple laps each day to lose weight. They could also hit the pool since it's summer. A couple of dumbbells and a curl bar will help them bulk up their arms. Chicks dig big guns and abs.

Get them a bike, great age to get involved in cycling. Lots of good racing at that age.

          What kind of budget?

I would get them involved in the arts. For a little over 100 bucks a month you can get them involved in something very healthy that they will enjoy and be rewarded for belt acomplishments.

Get them running to shed the lbs. But to burn more calories and improve physique, dumbells will be the most cost effective. You can do just about any workout with dumbells. Chest, arms, back, legs...etc.

These kids are 12 and 13...putting them in karate will only get them made fun of. Now if you're referring to BJJ or MMA I agree that would be a good idea. But mentioning the belt accomplishments, I have a feeling you got a little foot, fist way in ya.

Something like P90X wouldn't be bad. Light weight, low impact and a few workouts to choose from. You can get the videos for $35 online and at that age you could get away with some 5, 10, 15 pound dumbbells.
Martial arts is also a great idea, they work hard and get something for succeeding. BJJ is great cardio and core.

Tell them to eat properly and get thrm involved in sports. Then, when they are 16, send em to the gym!

12-13 is too young for weights IMO. Sport and regular exercise and a good diet is fine till 15-16. If they are going to lift at that age, make it light with huge emphasis on form.

It's not though. 12 and up are going through massive hormone boosts, mainly testosterone. As long as they're not banging their joints around there will be a huge benefit. Very controlled weight lifting will do nothing but benefit them physically and emotionally.
