Why would you suggest for him to eat more red meat? Lean or not, there is better ways of getting protein than red meat when you're on a diet trying to lose weight. Pork is a very good alternative as long as it is in moderation(as with everything) and it is trimmed appropriately. I don't think anyone is saying he should eat a bunch of bacon and breakfast sausage, but chops, loins, and even hams, are perfectly good choices with moderation.

Because from a nutritional standpoint, there is no comparison between swine and a yard bird.
I always try to pay attention to what an animal's diet is(generally), before I put that animal into my body.
I am not saying that I do not have a bit of ham that I carmelize on occasion, but it is not a staple food to me, such as chicken is.

Here is some food for thought:

In most modern farms, pigs are fed the worst of foods.
On the biggest farms, the largest pigs are fed rotten eggs and chickens that died from disease.
Sometimes, pigs are kept in batteries where only a few pigs get the food. The rest of the pigs get only the droppings, which are extremely toxic. Any tissue from these animals makes them very unclean indeed.
Pigs have very high histamine levels. The connective tissue is very rich in sulfur, leading to increased blood acidity and osteoporosis because of the loss of calcium along with the sulfates. Research indicates that high sulfate levels, especially in meat-rich diets, are responsible for osteoporosis.
Research has found that at the time when pigs leave the farms, 56% of all pork samples are contaminated with salmonella. When "clean" animals leave the farms, only 15% of the meat is contaminated. When the pig meat leaves the abattoir, 80% is contaminated, and when it reaches the butcher, the level of contamination is virtually 100%. The "clean" animals have only a 40% contamination level by this stage.
The pig is certainly responsible for much disease. Many people are allergic to pork because of the high histamine levels, and pork also encourages the formation of excessive amounts of mucous in our bodies.

Of course, this can all be cooked off at >165 degrees, but the high fat content(in a lot of cuts of pork), high cholesterol, and high sodium will still be in what you consume.

Truth... Pork is ok to break it up, but you don't want it as a main staple of "healthy" eating. The only thing I will add is that it's not necessary to cook to 165 to be "done". 145 is considered done.

God damn wide load, you better get some running shoes. If my lazy fat ass can get up at 4:30 am and run a few miles, any one can. Anything else is just a bunch of fucking excuses.

I'm positive you can find negative information for any food. I still say lean pork is better than most other foods out there. Have you ever seen how chickens are held? Or how about most of the farm raised fish from Asia?

Dont be hard headed and pick out one food while neglecting the rest dude...and no shit he's not gonna make it the cornerstone of his diet lol

Just like you don't start a beginner on a marathon, you do not start a beginner on a severe and advanced diet. Weighing food and being paranoid about osteoporosis from pork is the dumbest way to have him approach this. It takes time and a transitional period to get where some of us are.

FYI I rarely eat pork either, but would never start a noob on one of my stricter diets.

It's diet, not intense training. If the man is super obese then his diet needs the most work so that he can be at a weight to start training.

It's that "I'll stop smoking next week" or "I'll go on a diet next week" that leads to cancer and obesity.

If you have a smartphone, download the myfitnesspal app and use it when eating out. Obviously eating at home will be healthier, but when you have to eat out, it helps tremendously in making better choices. Even at the major fast food chains, the difference between the best and worst things on their menu is shocking.

I travel for work and eat out A LOT, out of necessity. Four years of this lifestyle had finally caught up with me and I was way heavier than I'd ever been before. Starting in Nov, I began counting calories, but didn't change my eating habits right away. I was shocked to find that I was taking in 4000-6000 calories a day, much of that from soda and energy drinks. Now, I choose better meals when eating out and it's worked out. I'm down 28lbs and my goal is to be under 200 by spring break (11 lbs to go).

Yes but lean pork wil get him there just like lean beef or chicken or fish.

                              You do know that right?

Hes going from a tough choice between a #4 or #6 to a low fat lean diet. Don't make it harder by adding in stupid details that he doesn't need to know for another 6 months or a year when he has adapted. At that time he can tackle the next roadblock.

Not only eating out, but at home as well. This is an excellent app and it scans barcodes of products you have and will upload the nutritional value instantly and nearly any thing. I was surprised at what all was included in the app. I haven't used in the last month, but the app is great for keeping track.
