  • Running the Rock in the rain...what rain gear do you like?

My wife and I are running the half at the Rock on Sunday and the forecast is +/-40deg and raining. I don't really have any running in the rain gear, so we're going shopping on Sat. I'd appreciate suggestions!

    Thanks!
    -Jonny

PS: I don't mean suggestions like "Don't run in the rain"!

Besides the suggestion you don't want - I've just sucked it up in the past. For the wife, we're going to just waterproof here regular jacket. After a mile it'll be off anyway and then it's just a matter of maintaining body heat - which the running should do just fine.

I'm of the opinion, having something dry to change into at the end is more important than rain gear during it. Especially since it is fairly chilly outside.

I'm not much of a runner but I've done some 100k rides in 50* rain. Like Ceyko said just resign yourself to being wet and be prepared to get into dry clothes as soon as you're done.
Personally, I'm not a giant fan of waterproof outerlayers. IMO they keep the rain off but they trap the mugginess inside which can be just as miserable. I'd rather just slog though it.

Yeah, that makes sense... My running club is going to lunch after, so a dry change is a good idea, either way.
        Thanks, y'all!

Chris, what corral is Candi in? We'll try and come say hi. We are going to line up in 12, I believe. Should be 4 of us doing the 4:2 run:walk at Trisa's pace. We are just going to have fun, since it's her first one. In March, I'll shoot for a sub 2hr and Trisa is on her own! haha! If Candi doesn't have anyone to run with, she's welcome to run with us.

wool running socks are supposed to be good in the rain, depending on the wind just keep a dry wick material against the skin along with windbreaker to stop the cold air and protect "exposed" skin from the cold air. Ive always disliked cold north wind hitting me in my face when its sweating. good luck and have fun.
Several Waco Striders will be there although I am unable to make it.

I run barefoot, but I thought I read wool is not good in the rain cause it soaks up the water. IDK. I think I'm leaning towards Chris' and Nine's suggestion and just suck it up till the race starts. Once I'm moving, I'll warm up in a mile or so. It would be nice to have a good thin water proof jacket to keep the rain off me. Probably gonna be out there 3hrs at my wife's pace.

            Thanks for the response!

I know this is horrible, but hell if I know which one she is in.

I'm just taking her there and doing some work while she does it.

She's running with a couple of girlfriends. I keep telling myself when they are done, I'll just get them all drunk...

Moisture wicking pants and shirt with a Goretex jacket would be what I would go with if you had to have a jacket.

Buddy had a really thin rain racket I borrowed, took it off when it wasn't raining and was making me hot, so... It started to pour! Egh! Ah well... I know what to look for and use next time. Thanks for the responses, y'all!

In spite of the conditions, it was pretty good! I was just my wife's wing-man...this was her first Half. She was on point with her training till a month and a half ago when she hurt her back doing Insanity and then she got sick. Considering she only ran 5miles 3 weeks ago, 8 miles the next week and a 10K race the Sat after Thanksgiving, the fact that she finished was awesome!! Time was 3:08 with a 10min stop in the middle to wait in line at the portajohns.

Honestly, that pace was pretty brutal for me! I think it's harder to run slower...must use different muscles or something. I'm never sore in my quads and hip flexors, but today I am! Also, before my half, I'd only run 1:48min and then 2:30 for my half 2 weeks ago(humidity owned me!) so over 3hrs was a big jump. My feet fared pretty well considering I was standing in water for 30min before, making them nice and soft before taking off and then running on wet ground and through puddles on some pretty rough surfaces the whole time. I got one blister, met Barefoot Todd (he's a big deal in the barefoot world), got some pretty funny comments and had a lot of fun! After the race, I met a guy who ran the full barefoot in 3:17...he looked like his feet hurt a lot, but he looked like he felt better than a lot of people I saw.

I think running for that long is a good spring board for my training for the R&R half in March. I want to run that one in under 2hrs. I think if I pre-fuel durring that race, every 30min and stay on top of my hydration, it should be no problem. I just gotta work on my base with longer mid week runs.

How is your training coming? You doing any Jingle Bell runs or anything the rest of the year? I think we have a 5k this month and another one in Jan in Frisco to support my wife's best friend...

your a blessed man to have a spouse you can run with. Want to do a half in Temple on saturday but my IT band is giving me grief, might just suck it up and do it as long as I have time to recover for the full in January. I might just get out my vibrams and work on form a bit and see if that helps, maybe just maybe I might end up barefoot too. Again great job and congrats to both of you on your half

This is QFT and why when in the Army we HATED group runs where we paced at the slowest person. Being in Signal, that meant some chick that was overweight. May only be running 3-4 miles, could knock it out quick but instead you there for an hour or more "trotting" not even jogging.

Still, was nice of ya to do that for her.

Jfrog, I hear IT can be caused by not stretching. My wife was having problems with hers and the running coach had her incorporate some stretches and a slightly higher knee lift and hers never flared, the whole 3hrs!
I wish Vibrams, or any minimalist shoe for that matter, were the answer to form issues. Truth is, most people get a false sense of security, over do it and get hurt. Just be careful and take it slow. We barefoot/minimalist folks tell all those new to it, do barefoot first. That will give you instant feedback through your soles if you're not doing it right. Once you have it down, then throw the shoes on. Even then, you have to take it slow and let your body acclimate to being flat footed and using muscles you don't use in a raised heal cushioned shoe. Not trying to turn this into a lesson... Just don't want you to get slowed down by an injury! ;-). Let me know how your races go, Animal!!

Chris, she's really doing it all for me. I'm the obsessed one! Always talking about running, the next race and hanging with my running club racing or talking about the next race! Haha!
