  • what's your definition of the best overall athlete?

strength, endurance, agility, speed, coordination, explosiveness. All these are what I think of when it comes to describing an "athlete"

now if I had to put all this together, a gymnast is what comes to mind. I think gymnast are the best all around type athlete there is.

your thoughts? (I left this very broad on purpose)

True, I was thinking more along the of quickness/reaction time, but yea that's not speed.

            1) speed
            2) vision and reflex
            3) stamina and recovery
            4) coordination and flexibility
            5) power, strength and size
            6) success and competitiveness

            Food for thought...

Yep. They are in a full body flex for 35-60 for MX (more for desert racers or hare scramble guys) twice a day, not including practice times while getting the shit kicked out of them and having to maintain top focus as the fly into a 180 turn at 60+mph while throwing around and controlling 250 additional pounds.

                    damn/thread. lol

                    homeboy is a beast!

AND THE WINNER IS: ROMAN SEBRLE. The Czech decathlete could jump over Shaquille O’Neal. He could throw a 16-pound ball the length of a 53-foot yacht. From a running start, he could leap over a two-lane highway. Mr. Sebrle has ideal size, according to physiologists, and expertise over a range of athletic pursuits, employing the speed of an NFL back and the vertical jump of an National Basketball Association forward. Some judges questioned whether Mr. Sebrle could withstand a tackle by an NFL lineman, but none questioned his talent in the 10 track and field events that make up the decathlon. He has won Olympic gold and silver medals for the Czech Republic and is the current world champion.

                        "Doing the common uncommonly well"

The top athletes in CrossFit are good examples of this. Consider Rich Froning's numbers:

                        Fran: 2:25
                        Cindy: 31
                        Grace: 1:30
                        Max Pull-ups: 55

                        Deadlift: 480
                        Bench: 320
                        Squat: 405
                        Snatch: 235
                        Squat Clean: 315
                        Power Clean: 265
                        Clean and Jerk: 315
                        Filthy Fifty: 23:00
                        Fight Gone Bad: 375
                        Back Squat: 365

                        And he runs a 5k in 21:20

These are pretty typical numbers at that level.

If you're going by sport category, it's hard to stack up against the Decathalon Athletes, but some decent "also rans" would have to be(in no particular order):

The Ninja Warrior All Stars are pretty legit! Not the goofy people that fall in the water in the first stage, but the guys who routinely make it to the 2nd and 3rd stages...that's some crazy agility, strength, endurance, ability to addapt, etc.

Tony Jaa is an athlete! Like Jackie Chan and Jet Li had a little brother who was addicted to Thai boxing, Parkour and speed! Explosive and agile with a super-sized helping of fearless!

Urijah Faber and GSP have to be a couple of the most althletic guys in MMA. Uriah defines explosive. That boy got an unfair amount of quick fibers from mom and dad and has fitness for days!!

                          That's my take, anyway.

have you been keeping up with Regionals? i was going to leave the CF out of this thread given the "love it or hate it" mentality some people have towards it.

Yah I have. I can't believe Miranda lost. I was crushed lol.

I wasn't either, but the haters don't have to respond, and I consider the games athletes the best example of being able to accomplish 'real world' fitness.
