  • 90 Jeep repair mechanic?

I just bought a 90 Jeep 4.2 and am looking to have some minor mechanical stuff done. The front ball joints need to be replaced. Also there is an issue with the shifting. It is tough to get into 1st gear when starting but when driving shifts okay. Reverse is an issue and grinds at times as well. Not sure exactly what the issue is.

Looking to find someone who is able to do these repairs at a reasonable price. I havent been to a mechanic in a while so not sure if there are some good shops locally. I am in Arlington/Mansfield area. thanks

Maybe be the clutch or the syncros. Have you tried bleeding or adjusting the clutch? Davey at I35 Transmission is outstanding and a square shooter on price if you need a rebuild.

Congrats! I was following your other thread...looks like a nice YJ you got! I am on my 8th Jeep. Trying to collect the whole set...

Nothing is as much fun or as capable as a Jeep. Once you get past the quirks and oddities, they are the most capable vehicle on the road.

Check out these guys as far as a fun group to go wheeling with in your area.

Changing the ball joints is straight forward process and pretty easy. A ball joint press will be needed though. If the BJs are loose, you can get death wobble. You will know when it happens. It is violent and immediate and severe. A through inspection of the suspension is vital to ensuring your YJ will drive correctly and safely, especially since it is lifted. These guys are in your AO and have good reviews.

You can also take it to 4 Wheel Parts, who specialize in off-road trucks and Jeeps.
There is a 4WP in Dallas and FTW, as well as Coppell and Plano.

Once you get the feel of it, you can go wheeling at a few places in the area. The city of Bridgeport has a 900+ acre rock quary they turned into a Jeep park, it is a blast. Also, the city of Gilmer has a 1800 acre Jeep park known as BMRA, or Barnwell Mountain Rec. Area.

Make sure your clutch master cylinder is full of fluid.
Join JeepForum, it is a great source of information and help, this thread is YJ specific as well.

Hope to see you out on the trails one day!
