Any of yall good with Dodge?

My buddys 04 cummins 2500 4x4 would never go into 4wd low, or high. Were having to replace the tranny so we broke into the t case tonight, it looks fine I took some pics on my phone that maybe one of yall could look at for me and give me your opinion.

did you put it in neutral before engaging the 4x4?

Manual, yes we did. When we test drove it, it worked, but a week later it didn't. We are fairly sure someone had opened it up before though.

Did it go from 2wd to neutral and back to 2wd drive ok? Would it go into 4wd high or low with the truck off. Was it grinding or just felt like you hit a wall when you tried to shift it? What did the fluid look like when you cracked open the case?

The fluid was nasty. Dirty, metal shavings all in it, really really dark. As far as would it go into gear I think so, we never really tried it after. It would go into neutral and back into 2wd but that's it
