  • Looking at an 07-10 Wrangler - input needed

I am thinking about buying a Wrangler Unlimited 07-10 and looking for any inspection tips that you all may have, problem areas to look for etc.

If you have a link to a website with a list that would be great also.

    Thanks

Mainly it will be a daily, I just moved up to the North East and looking for a
4x4 with a short overall length and 4 doors, the Wrangler fits the bill. If I luck out I may make it up into PA to drive on some trails, but that will be once or twice a year.

With something that new, I'd look mainly for signs of abuse. People see the Jeep ads on TV, then try to duplicate them in real life, then get rid of them when they can't. Check for gouges on the bottom of the skid plates, suspension, etc. Scratches are normal, but big dents and gouges are usually a sign of what most people would call abuse. It's normal use for "us" but not really something you'd want in a DD. Other than that, check the normal stuff: Maintenance records if they have them, sloppy/worn out steering/suspension components, a super filthy or super clean engine compartment, etc.

If you plan on doing some light to medium trails and don't want to spend a ton in aftermarket stuff . Go ahead and spend a little extra now and get a Rubicon .

Be prepared for a gutless engine. The manual transmission should make it seem to run a little better. Look for certified Jeeps, as they will come with some sort of warranty.

Aside from being underpowered, we haven't had any issues with our '10.

We had a 2010 Unlimited automatic for about 3 months. It looked cool and was fun for a little bit. The serious lack of power was annoying and I was chasing rattles every week. Gas mileage is also horrible due to the lack of power. To me it was uncomfortable but I am a bigger guy and used to having room in a truck. Ours had 36k miles, 2" lift and 33" tires which didn't help with the power and rattles.

If you can.. get a 2012 model with the better motors that have like 80-90 more hp.

Some things that Snatch and his wife told us to look for were obvious signs of abuse such as caked mud underneath or rust on anything underneath (besides DS).

My wife loves her 2010 Rubicon unlimited. I lifted it with a cheap spacer 2.5 lift and some 37s with flat fenders, works great offroad and really isnt that bad onroad. If you're a speed demon, then yeah it probably will suck, but i'm used to big and slow and its not THAT bad. I'm probably going to go up to 40s and i'll finally regear at that point to 5.38s lol.

ours is the one in the left side of the picture.

We havent had any mechanical problems to date, and we're not easy on it by any means. we just rolled over 30k miles.

Newer engines are better, Rubicons are best out of the box if you want to run a larger tire. For all the work you don't want to do go to baertrax. Best off-road shop in dallas.

If you want to find parts locally, check out this forum. lsjc.org. Good community, better parts.

I think I may hold out another year and see if I can get the '12 Rubicon at a decent price. It seems the power and mileage went up, but man these things hold their value like nothing else.

Thanks to all for the input.
