  • 540CI radial engine in an MR2...

Won't be long before it actually runs. I can't imagine this will last very long though....

Never before has so little power been made from so much displacement! (Page 1) — The Airplane-Powered MR2 — The 24 Hours of Lemons Forums —

How is the power band of those motors? I would think uneven cooling would wreak hell on that design.

They run at a pretty narrow RPM range. I think he is going to have an issue keeping it cool. On an airplane the prop wash should help cool it sitting on the ground and once you get some speed and altitude heat isn't an issue if it's tuned right. This kid is sticking the motor inthe back of an MR2 that might hit 70mph for 10-15 seconds if he's lucky.

he got an exemption based on the complete badassery of the idea/build. At least im pretty sure thats what he said in there somewhere

              That's fucking stupid - I LOVE it!

I didn't read through the whole thread, just clicked through to look at pics etc. I'm not a big fan of the alternator drive system, or the hall sensor mount - I can't see the chain bieng accurate enough to hold the sensor trigger at WOT..either way, cool ass build!

ok first ok, that is kickass! I got two big issues with it though....

First, how is it a Lemons car? I hear ya on the "pass" given to him but doesnt that kind of kill the spirit of the whole thing? I would be curious to hear what his total out of pocket cost was on that thing.

Secondly, I think it looks awsome and there is a some great fab work there but I personally would have had a hard building knowing it was going to grenade it self without a prop to cool it. I read he maybe running E85 and maybe even some kind of meth injection trying to cool the combustion chambers but I really think its inevitable. Especially on those bottom cylinders. I hope Im wrong though!

Interesting. I think he needs a fan on the other end of that crank pulley.

I've been folloing since it was just a dumb idea... I love it.

Either him or one of his drivers runs a fab shop, so a lot of those parts were dirty cheap on the one-offs, and that kickass billit transfer case was oiginally built for a motorcycle engine in a metro... They donated it.

I don't remember what the engine cost, but it was dirty cheap too. All the bullshit needed to make it work would put him over the $500 limit, so he stopped working and scrapped the idea. Judges gave him an exemption so he woould continue the epic build.

I like it. Almost as much as the turbine powered MR2
