Sapsuckers can eat bugs but their main goal is to find trees that produce adequate sap in order to provide a food source and a nesting site for them. The tree is obviously not sick or dying, which is when borers come in to finish off the tree. If it can produce enough sap for these birds to come in and continue to feed from it then it is obviously in decent health. The reason they put numerous holes is because they need soft, fresh tissue exposed, they can't retrieve sap from a previous spot that has dried. There is no point in treating for borers.

Seems like a lot of work to wrap the whole tree, when the bird could just....disappear or go swimming with the fishes or something.

need to go get a fake owl and mount it in the tree....works good for keeping the grackles away too. if no owl get a handfull of rubber snakes and throw them in the tree. works well too.

It's more than one bird and more will come. Wrapping would take an hour and cost less than $100. A new live oak is easily $100+ for small sized and if it's anything close to the current size it'll run at least a grand w/install.
