Imagine if you had the intellect of a toddler and mom's boyfriend offered to take you to Disney World. Only mom knew he was a flake and kicked him to the curb and planned on taking you to Six Flags instead but she wanted dad to pay for it.

Dad works hard for his money and loves his kids but he wants you to clean your room, do the dishes, mow the grass and make good grades before taking you.

So the boyfriend promises the world even though everyone knows it's not going to happen. Mom promises less but still wants to give you stuff as long as someone else pays for it. Dad wants you to work for it.
