Yea, if you don't have a month to go out to the ocean take a trip out to big bend or Lajitas. Once you get away from the light pollution of the cities its crazy how the sky looks.

The camera will adjust the exposure to whatever available light there is, which is why it appears that way. If the camera were stuck on a single exposure it would be pitch black. Generally when you see the colors wash out to a very warm or cool hue, it usually means the exposure is set high.
