To expand upon Nathan Kaemingk's answer and put some numbers to it from a vehicle perspective:
Consider the Tesla Model S, which has an available 85kWh battery and a 265 mile range.
Consider a similar gas-powered car, which gets 35 mpg.
Gasoline contains about 33kwh of energy per gallon.
The Tesla uses 320 Wh/mile of energy (85kWh/265 miles)
The gas powered car uses 940 Wh/mile of energy (33kWh/35 miles)
Once the energy is onboard (not counting the efficiency of the power generation, oil refining, or charging), the Tesla is using only about a third as much energy as the comparable gasoline-powered car.2004 Z06 Commemorative Ed.

Right now EVs cannot repeat their high performance runs back to back. The choke point is keeping the battery cool and until technology improves better cooling than what they do now is not going to be possible. An EV may win on the first pass but it won't on the second third fourth Etc.
Edit: Given current technology the ultimate production street drag racer will be a hybrid.Last edited by svauto-erotic855; 10-02-2021, 05:41 PM.Magnus, I am your father. You need to ask your mother about a man named Calvin Klein.

You're not wrong, but the gap in performance is so large now that it takes a lot to get the Tesla down to parity in performance. And let's not pretend that a tradition combustion engine drivetrain doesn't have some fall off at peak performance. Plenty of cars go into limp mode when pushed at or near the limit for too long. I think the latest version of the Telsa requires about a five minute warm up from a normal resting battery temperature and can still run sub ten second 1/4 mile ET at 20% state of charge. Running low 9's in a four door that costs $130K seems plenty fun to me.

^^^ I'm not really knocking them, I just don't like them. Being an engineer I gravitate to what works and I'm acutely aware of the limitations of what I'm working with. I'm sure that I've mentioned it before but when I was in high school and early into college my goal was to go to work for one of the big three designing electric cars. That bubble got burst when I built an electric car and crashed headlong long into the limitations of the technology. I've said it over and over but I'll say it again. The challenges I faced in the late 80s with an electric car are the exact same challenges that every EV manufacturer is facing now and they are insurmountable because they are the limitations of the technology.Magnus, I am your father. I've never raced them either and have had a few chances, I just ignore them, because they are ugly as fuck.
Now the new Lucid, Fisker and Audi look pretty dope. but until they get the MPC's up, and price goes down I'm not buying one anytime soon.
I would buy a MACH E GT just to bust my S.I.L's ass in his Y type, just because he's always bragging about how fast it is.Originally posted by SilverbackLook all you want, she can't find anyone else who treats her as bad as I do, and I keep her self esteem so low, she wouldn't think twice about going anywhere else.
