The spray a oily tar type stuff down, and drop gravel on top of it. I think that was sped up just a bit, but it doesnt take long for them to lay it down.

Tar and chip, isn't it? They just have the right equipment and a very efficient process.

I'm guessing it's preferable to the dirt road when it rains.

But probably washes away with any measurable rain.

True.. certainly not as good as regular pavement. But now that I think about it, how much rain do they really get there. Maybe they are doing it for dust..

The oil seals the road to help stop rainwater penetration, which speeds up erosion and pot holes. The chip rock is there so that you don't drive in the oil. If they could spray it and not have it pick up on tires or become unmanageable when it rained, they wouldn't put the rock down at all.

                      It's a Band-Aid, and TxDOT loves it.

The area I live in in the county is all done with that. It actually holds up pretty well. If it get a pothole, it's easy to fix.

I had some come by yesterday as well

Anyways, tar and chip is very popular throughout the country. I almost had my driveway done with tar and chip.

If I was in the country with a long driveway, that's probably what I would do..

We have done gypsy asphalt and chip seal at our shops and from my experience the chip seal holds up just as good as the cheap gypsy asphalt.
