That was bad ass, when that bitch fired up it was nothing but the sweet sound of V8-powa!

"... speeds haven't increased that much in NASCAR in all the time since then..."
I'm sure NASCAR regulations have zero to do with that.

Cool piece on Issac for sure.... love that Daytona Charger.

There's a story floating around out there about Issac seeing Jesus while running (at speed) down the back straight at Daytona, came into the pits, got outta' the car and said "I'm done" and retired from racing. (not sure that's entirely accurate, but that's the gist of it)

In the late 80s they put an unrestricted car onto Talladega and after a few warmup laps it did one that averaged 264 mph. It was the black Miller Genuine Draft car but I do not remember who the driver was. It was fucking awesome to watch and the car used every inch of the track.

You must have been driving to get it up to 264 mph.

Or they lost about 40-50 mph from the 80's to early 2000's.

The run that I am talking about was used in beer commercials for awhile. It was not just a car with the restrictor plate removed. It was a car set up to make 3-4 laps at speed and every trick in the book was thrown at it. It was also Ford powered if I remember correctly.

Oddly enough I have gone 263 mph on the ground.

"Speeds in excess of 200 mph (320 km/h) are commonplace at Talladega. Talladega has the record for the fastest recorded time by a NASCAR vehicle on a closed oval course, with the record of 216.309 mph (348.116 km/h) set by Rusty Wallace on June 9, 2004.[13] Wallace circled the 2.66-mile (4.28-km) trioval in 44.270 seconds, which surpassed the previous record held by Bill Elliott (212.809 mph (342.483 km/h)) set in 1987, but did not replace the record due to the fact that it was a radio test and not a NASCAR sanctioned event."
                        ..

I am pretty sure we all knew there was more to the story.

^^Rusty Wallace drove an unrestricted Penske Dodge at Talladega to 224ish several years back.... I think that is the closed course stock car (unofficial) record.

Not sure how fast one of those cars could run at Bonneville...but I don't recall ever hearing about the 264 mph run referred to above?? Any links to the story?
