  • New Daily.....surprised myself!

Well, it's taken nearly 5 months of trying to make up my mind on what USED car I was going to buy to serve as a new daily/track car that would split time with my suburban once I get it running again. I've been trying to decide on what I was going to get that would be a decent dual duty car that would be fun on the street and could be driven to the track and back so I wouldn't have to load up the race car and gear for a weekend of fun. I REALLY wanted an 08 C6 vette but finding the right one that wasn't a rolling pile of shit for the right price was proving to be difficult and practically every one that I found was WAY overpriced and was going on 9 years old even though some only had 40k miles, they were in terrible shape. I considered C5 Z06's but prices are going UP strangely and many are in even worse condition.

I went and drove a 2016 2SS Camaro and liked the engine, hated the interior, the ride and auto trans. Couldn't find a manual without having to drive to Houston so I lost interest. I decided against the 2016 mustang unless it was a GT350R and I wasn't going to spend $65k....NOPE!

Wasn't left with many choices and even started looking to used GT500's but I have to say, I'm sort of tired of mod motors and Mustangs in general. I tossed around ideas about newer BMW's but the thoughts about all the issues surrounding direct injection BS turned me off as did the cost of maintenance.

Where does a knuckle dragger turn?! LOL!

After leaving the chevy dealer, we had to drive past a dodge dealer and my wife pulled in (she was driving). She sees a 2016 Charger SRT8 and asks for a test drive. Suffice to say, my wife has an issue with impulse buys and about an hour and a half later, we no longer own an AWESOME 2008 Porsche Cayenne GTS, but trade it for the 2016 Charger SRT8 with the 6.4L in Granite Gray. Awesome car. Still hasn't solved my issue though.

Fast forward a week and I've driven her car a few times. Researched some more and found that her car will do CRAZY things like 0-60 in 4.3s, 0-100 in 9.8s, 1/4 in 12.4 with grip at 112mph. Basically a Hellcat without the blower...or an AMG E63 for Half the price. Loving it suffice to say and ALL of its 4400#. Dodge advertises 485hp/475tq but some guys are seeing 440rwhp/430rwtq after about 7500miles through an auto!!!! STOCK!!! SAE!!!

So Saturday I decide to go back to the dodge dealer and look at the Challengers which I have been bashing for the last 5 or 6 years as being TOO HEAVY and TOO BIG. Well, they have the Scat Pack version which I never heard of. Same 6.4L, smaller brakes, non-adjustable suspension, same 8spd trans, same 8.4" touchscreen and $10k cheaper than the SRT8. Just have to deal with 440 treadwear tires which have ZERO grip which allow instant hoonage. At 200# lighter, it's faster...if there is grip and has TORQUE that a mustang can only DREAM of.....and I can likely say we have the coolest driveway in College Station now. So far I'm loving it and happy to have finally made the choice of a new car, my first since 2004. So over buying used junk for so many years and happy to have treated myself to a new toy. Only downside is to have a damn car payment for the first time in nearly 4 years...LOL! As for the TRACK use...guess I'll still be using the racecar for that. 4230# of challenger probably won't do so well on track. Come to think of it, my 87 suburban 4x4 only weighs 4600#! LOL!

Nice.....bring them up to Amarillo for the Mopar show next month! All Mopar show and it is free!

Also consider making a trip to Bondurant High Performance Driving School. We did the 2 day class in manual shift Challenger Hellcats. Your skid car is a scat pack Charger. You get skid car time, road course time, autocross, accident avoidance training and a few other exercises. It was a blast! If you think the challenger is to heavy for the track. I think you will have a different opinion after the class. I certainly did.

And I am pretty sure Dodge is offering big rebates and 0.0% for 60 months on the Scat Packs.

Nice car, but I didn't see one mention of daily MPG's? I guess living closer to the refineries means cheaper fuel...

Yeah, $3000 rebate and some dealer discounts. Not as cheap as the mustang but at least it's different. No need on the bondurant stuff...I do that shit once a month 7 miles from the house! In fact, doing it this weekend here at TWS! LOL! The 15.4" 6 piston Brembos are AWESOME on her SRT8. the "little" 14.2" 4 piston brembos on mine fade REALLY quick. I already have my eye on a Stoptech ST60 kit with 15" rotors and 6 piston race setup....but that is WAY down the road.

Rebates were nice and I got a decent deal. Wasn't "hey I stole it!" but it was ok. I almost bought a B5 Blue SRT8 challenger but I couldn't find how it was $12k more car beyond the brakes ($2k) and the adjustable Suspension which I will probably change anyway. The "track" driving mode can be had with an OBDII module for $250 and can even add a line lock function for smokey burn outs!

I don't look at mpg's, I relate to smiles per gallon!

At the Bondurant school the Hellcat was on full and showed 89 miles until empty! The one we own has used 2-3 tanks of gas, in the year we have owned it! But it only has 350 miles on it!

Salesman mentioned "eco" mode on the SRT8 and told him we weren't going to buy the car because it had it! Cayenne averaged 12.5mpg...these so far are averaging 21 on the hwy and 15 in town. NOT shedding a tear over that at all! LOL!

The best part about the driving school...it was hammering someone else car and knowing what they are capable of. I was very surprised how nimble the cars were at speed. They actually felt more at home on the track than the street. My Challenger feels like a comfy couch compared to my old 09 Mustang GT. In fact we had a Shelby GT-H rental racer for a rent car while we were out there. After driving the challengers all day and jumping in the Shelby. I was surprised how rough the Shelby was at low speeds even compared to the Challenger at any speed.

Not bad for a hotrod. I'm lol @ the Cayenne, fuck me 12 mpg's, what did that thing weigh, 5k lbs?

<---Chief/Senior Driving School Instructor at 5 or 6 driving schools! LOL!

I have driven Ferrari's, Lambos, Merc's, Audi's, Vettes, and all kinds of cars for free over the years. Vehicle dynamics are my thing and I can usually tell you the spring rates and damper rates as well as the size of the pebble I just drove over while on track....yet somehow, I ended up buying a challenger. If that doesn't tell you something about how well the 2015/2016 generation challenger is sorted...especially compared to the 2016 Camaro. I don't know what does. This is a GREAT daily driver. We shall see about the track this weekend although I only have 220 miles on it so far!

Hopefully they figured out the water pump issues on those. A coworker just got his back after a month of a rental car because the WP was on back order.

His is a 2014 Challenger with the V8, not SRT8, though.

                          Man thats pretty rad.
Can you please expand on the c6 issue? I can seriously see me getting a c6 or a c5z (less likely) very soon. I'm seeing some c6's in the high teens which is very appealing to me.

What's worn out of the ones youre seeing?

Seems like you got the wrong car for your stated goals and ended up with something that makes you happy in other ways. Can't hate it. I think those cars look great. If it turns out to be the right ratio of comfy:fun for daily use, all the better.
