How do they know where to go?

I'm assuming the co-pilot has to memorize a certain route and he gives hand signals to the driver on the up-coming turn.

Similar to the off-road and rally races where they have the navigator that is watching the gps and tells the driver when, where, and how hard to turn.

I got to ride one of those courses on old (race boat) polaris pwc I had a few years back... Tons of fun on that thing but I couldn't talk my way into piloting one of the jet boats.
