  • Any Jeep people on the board?

Im looking to buy a jeep and needing some info on if its a good deal. Ive always liked them but am still learning. Heres the info.

1990 Jeep Wrangler V6 4.2L engine. Only 118k miles. Has different gears in back which gives it more torque. Its a rock crawling type jeep. Has extra lights in front. Condition looks solid, some cosmetic minor issues. Seats torn, ect. Bigger tires and lots of parts recently replaced.

Bad - Says it needs new front ball joints. Said you can tell sometimes when driving. Cosmetic seat and some small panel issues.

My concerns are how much to fix ball joints, with it geared differently he said its driveable around town but only gets maybe 10mpg. I dont plan on crawling rocks so would like to see how much to change out gears to make it more of a street jeep.

Hes asking $3000 for it. Seems like a great deal to me. Anyone with Jeep knowledge have an opinion?

Hes sending more pictures tonight but here are the 2 that I have now.

$3k is cheap, and it looks clean from the pics.

If it's 4WD, don't the gears in the front have to match the gears in the rear?

Different gears out back? do they match the upfront gears?

It does have 4 wheel drive. Not sure all the mechanics stuff. Makes sense they have to be same

Dig a little deeper on that. I know on my F250, I can't just change the rear gears if I ever want to use my 4WD. I'd have to change both. I don't see why a Jeep would be different, but I'm no expert.

If that's the case, you don't want to be unable to use your 4wd, and you don't want to drive it in 4wd and fuck something up. And, if the guy didn't know better and/or is not being up front about something, that could be a red flag, too.

Yeah he told me that. It's the bigger 4.2 motor as well before Jeep changed.

I'm a newbie here. Is carb that much different and going to cause me problems if it's just a weekend around town car??

That's 100% the case. If it has a different ratio up front than in the back it would not drive in 4x4. But i cant imagine anyone just doing the back.

3k is the "its too good to be true" price. Be very skeptic of this one. I see NOTHING even close to this for less than 6-7500. Yes both axles should be the same ratio or its gonna grenade the first time you put it in 4wd. Also I wouldn't change them out as what little guts the thing has now will evaporate instantly. I think what he meant is that the thing has been re-geared period not just one axle. Its worth 3k as a roller. If you don't get it let me know where it is and if it really is what it is advertised to be I will scoop it up and flip it for a quick 3k in my pocket. But to be honest the guy is an idiot, its a scam, or his wife is mad at him.

Its also a square light yj with front leafs, but if the body is good and the motor is ok, u cant beat that price. Most wranglers in the $3k range r usually junk.

3k is cheap, a customer of mine just paid 6k for his 2000 and I had to pull off the head for a valve job I would look very close at it for that price

I understand that. He said he could put a grand in it, fix the few issues and resell for 5k but would just rather sell as is.

I plan on driving it and checking it out the best I can. Im just not sure what he could be hiding that would be such a major issue that I wouldnt be able to pick up on????

Im not a car expert....just lookin for a cheap weekend toy/project
