  • So this followed me home today...

    I know...not a Ford, but oh well.

It's a 65 GMC, it belonged to my wife's Gpa. It was about to be claimed by the kids of a second wife married to the Gma's brother and my wife said "Oh HELL NO!" So it'll sit for another year or two until I get a permanent garage to start disassembly.

This was the only pic I took on the way home. 62k original miles, has been parked for over 25 years. The interior is damn near perfect...the sun visors are done but the seats don't have a single crack in them. The V6 engine turns over and should start once I get the fuel system cleaned out and maybe replace the points. I don't think I'll put too much effort in the V6 though. Down the road I'm thinking LS swap, swap out the 3/4 ton suspension, along with the usual mods. It would've been perfect if it was a short bed but it was bought with a purpose. It had a camper in the bed for most of its life. The grandparents would travel to East Tx and back with the kids in the camper. Up until it was removed about 10 years ago, the wood bed was flawless. Now it'll need replacement.

    What do you think?

That should clean up really well. It sucks that pulled the camper out that would have been cool.

    V6?

yeah, I thought the same thing. The relative we picked it up from said something about a V8 engine that GM thought would save fuel so they shaved off the 2 rear (or front) cylinders...I don't know much about it.

I was hoping to power wash it but we got back really late and I had to return the trailer.

I would avoid power washing. Just clean it by hand and use CLR if you want to remove the oxidation.

I had no idea they put the 60 degree 6 cylinder motors in those trucks.

Looks really solid. Glad to hear it will remain in the family. I'm lucky enough to have my Grandpa's 71 Chevy C20 Cheyenne.

That V6 is a whole different animal. Plaid valve covers that look nothing like a SBC, spark plugs are across the top of the head. They made a V12 702ci version too.

Post pics of the engine, I'd like to see that.

leave as 3/4 ton and do a big block. way cheaper and less headaches in the parts list.

That's a cool ole truck. Years ago I had a 66 GMC and a 74 GMC parts truck. The front cross member bolted right in. Power steering, power and disc brakes and v8 mounts. But, i never got to drop the v8 in it, so I don't know how well it matched up. Somebody drove by and wanted both alot more than me. I hope you start a thread when you start on it, I'd like to see it as you go along.

I've power washed a few old trucks like that and it was well worth it in the amount of time it saved. I would, however, not recommend it unless you were prepared to do body work and get it primed rather soon after. On older vehicles, especially ones with a lot of corrosion or staining, you will usually blow the paint right off in areas.

Thanks everyone. I'll try to get some engine and interior pics posted. The LS and 3/4 ton suspension swap could very well change. It's way too early to know which direction it will go but I will definitely start a build thread once that happens.

Thanks for the tip CJ, I may hand wash it just to knock the dirt and stains off. I'd like to get any rust spots addressed but 1)I'm afraid of the can of worms that might open and 2) it's not drivable so getting it to a body shop will be difficult.

This will be cool, hell, I'd get it running as it is first and play around with it. At least make it so you don't have to push it everywhere, it can't be light.
