  • My African Adventure

Figured I would start a thread with pics of my African adventures.

These are from a trip to check out the smugglers moving refugees to Libya.

Every Monday, smugglers load up single cab Toyota pickups with water, pertol, spare parts, and roughly 30 refugees to head out to Libya. The refugees have been here in Agadez in hidding for a couple days to up to a week by now. But they have to wait for a small military convoy who escorts them to leave on Mondays. My driver took me out and showed me their meeting points from afar but we were a little late. What we did see were 7 trucks, who were late trying to catch the main body, speeding past loaded down with refugees.

They meet up north of the city by 80km at a certain time and wait. After midnight and very early in the morning they push off as 1 large group for security reasons and head 1,500km north to wards Libya.

Wonder where the migrant crisis in Europe comes from? About 500-1,000 pass through Agadez, Niger every week.

                .
When we got back to the hotel one of the guys in the back seat says "I think we picked up a tail". Yo bro, when we get back to our fucking house is not the time to say something. There was a pickup that we passed out in the area that he thinks followed us back. I described it back to him and then he thinks that maybe it wasn't the same one.

So, do you put sunscreen on or do you just wear as much clothes as you can to stave off the heat?

Hell, I get suspicious of someone behind me when I turn into my subdivision if they are still behind me after two streets.

I haven't used sunscreen yet. My arms got a little burned one day but my skin adapts pretty well to the sun. I'll darken up with the more sun I get.

I brought loose fitting short and long sleeve button up shirts. If the long sleeves will roll up and I can secure them up, I will. I have a couple of long sleeve that you can't get the sleeves up but they are made of a very thin breathable material. They are similar to the military shirts designed to be worn under body armour. I rotate a few hats to keep the sun off my head and neck. And I wear loose fitting thin cargo pants like 5.11s. My sunglasses are probably the most important.

It's hot as fuck here. So hot that there is no need for water heaters. The water in the tank is hot enough. If we loose power in the hotel, which happens frequently, the room will heat up real fast. Our old hotel was much better made and the a/c could be off for an hour before you felt the temp in the room change. But those walls were 2-3' thick mud and brick.

There is a huge criminal element here. Weapons coming down from Libya and refugees going up to Libya on a pretty fixed routine. They don't want us fucking with them any more than I want them fucking with us. But the military gonna do what the military do and it will effect us more since we live out in the town not on a base.

It is just a matter of time before IS moves a little further south into Niger to bridge the gap from Libya to Boko Haram in Nigeria. When that starts to happen I expect things to change for the far worse here.

So far, we have tons of freedom of movement in the daylight hours. But we try to be in before the sun sets. The streets definitely have a different feel at night. Lots more activity.

It can be depressing seeing some of it but there is nothing you can do about it.
