Neighbor across the way has wood siding and just got it painted and it looks great.

Mine didn't look bad when I bought the place, but there was some dirty parts out back. Paid a company to come out to clean then gutters and soft-wash the whole house. I'll have to grab a picture, but it looks like they didn't spray the chemical off on the front side of my garage or above it. I called the guy and he basically said it was sun damage (the other half of my house facing them same way has none though) and blew me off. My house now looks even worse, and to top it off one of the gutters is still clogged.

Now that I think about it, if I'm going to burn anything it should be his business.

Hardiboard is pretty durable. Re-siding a whole house can get expensive.
