21 of 51 global missions to Mars have failed.
India just put a satellite into orbit around Mars. They relied on modeling instead of real world testing, used existing tech rather than re-invent stuff, and they used slingshotting to drastically cut fuel usage and rocket size. They did it for $73MM.
One F-35 costs $160MM.
NASA's Maven satellite - "broadly comparable in scope to India's mission" - will cost $671 million (launching in Nov)
