I watched a Dateline story on it several months ago. Amazing story and I would reccomend watching it OnDemand if possible.
A groups of Sea Bees or something just happen to be transporting the exactly or only machine that would work to get the car supported for the firefighters to do work. They were caught in the backup going the opposite direction and were actually delayed by something random which allowed them to get caught at that exact moment.
Also, I think her husband was wondering where she was and actually saw the live coverage of her on the news.

Awesome. It's a great book. Follow it up with Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas if you like it, then The Run Diary. The Great Shark Hunt is a great anthology, and the title story is fucking hilarious.
There is a part where Hunter is at an acid party in Hell's Angels at Ken Kesey's house(author of One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest). It is referenced in The Electric Kool Aid Acid Test from Tom Wolfe, who followed Kesey's Merry Pranksters around the country on the bus Furthur, that was piloted my Dean Moriarty (actually Neal Cassidy) who was Jack Kerouac's sidekick and muse in On The Road. Funny to watch all these badass writers inadvertently collide with each other over the course of 20 years of incredible literature, some before their seminal works, others after.

okay, now that picture needs some explanation. That has to be the most puzzling picture I have ever seen."When the people find that they can vote themselves money, that will herald the end of the republic." -Benjamin Franklin
"A democracy will continue to exist up until the time that voters discover that they can vote themselves generous gifts from the public treasury." -Alexander Fraser Tytler
