Older mack trucks use to use air powered starters also.

Air starters are still used on all kinds of industrial engines. I just put one on a little c-15 genset yesterday.

Direct drive to the prop. For reverse, the engine is started in the opposite direction of rotation. Those large diesels are the most efficient reciprocating combustion engines ever created. Funny thing is, they are two stroke. They are started using compressed air because it is impractical to have an electric starter motor that would supply tens of millions pound-feet of torque at cranking rpms.

Ahhhhh!...i remember in the movie titanic when they order reverse right before the iceburg they let the engine slow down to almost nothing then reverse the rotation of the engine

When I was a teen, we bought a used two-stroke motorcycle. Sometimes, when it was idling, it would change direction. You wouldn't realize it until you tried to take off and it would go backward. The previous owner has set the timing up two far and it was causing it to do that.
