It's actually really damn easy to understand damascus steel if they weren't all a bunch of morons and studied materials chemistry. Chunk of coal when folding iron, fold iron 2-5 times depending upon carbon content, repeat 3-10 times. Boom fucking fantastic damascus steel, and yes I'm a god damn materials chemist and engineer.
