It's more of an order of operations issue.

Here's what happened in terms of numbers:

100/2-1-1

You borrowed $100 from each parent, then paid each parent back $1.

They are taking the $100, then subtracting the dollar you paid each of the parents before dividing by two, which = $97 which is wrong.

It basically comes down to you borrowed $98, then spent $97, so you have $1 to keep.
