Credit card companies make it very clear that they will never ask for your CC number. "A fool and his money will soon be departed."

There is a spin on that going around where teh scammers provide you with your own CC number so you think its legit, but they need you to confirm the 3 digit security code from the back of the card. That catches some people off guard.
